Swindon/Bath DRC Attendance and Appraisal Policy

We hope that GPRs will learn from, enjoy and contribute to the Day Release Course.  The Course Organisers recognize that they are supporting and educating adult learners, and accordingly both they and the Registrars have equal responsibility for producing a successful course.  This page sets out briefly to clarify those responsibilities and expectations.

The Course Organisers have agreed to:

  • put on a high quality course that will
    • complement teaching in training practices
    • help prepare GPRs for the world of General Practice
    • help prepare GPRs for Summative Assessment
    • help prepare GPRs for the MRCGP
  • consult GPRs during course planning
  • start and end sessions on time
  • be available to help and mentor registrars with particular problems
  • feed back to registrars concerning their performance on the course.

Participating Registrars are expected to:

  • attend all Day Release Course sessions

  • fully engage in preparation for, and in the educational sessions provided
  • constructively feedback to the Course Organisers about the success or otherwise of each session, so that the course can be further improved.
  • Arrive promptly for the course, making adequate allowance for travel time and the appalling parking at PMH and the RUH!
  • Participate in the course appraisal system.

Attendance

The DRC isn’t optional. GPRs need to:

  • arrive promptly for the morning sessions

  • stay until the end of the afternoon sessions
  • take an active part in
    • weekly groupwork
    • workshops
    • pre-session preparation
    • occasional end-of-day summarizing
    • occasional presentations (e.g. “soapbox”)
    • other DRC work as needed.

A GPR that is unable to attend due to illness or planned leave needs to notify Paula (01225 824894 or e-mail ) as soon as possible.

The COs aim to timetable the Course so that it doesn’t overlap with other useful courses, but if there is an overlap then attendance at the DRC takes priority.

An on-call duty isn’t an acceptable reason for a problem with attendance (or for sleeping through the morning session!) - trainers are aware that GPRs:

  • Must never be on call the night before the DRC
  • Must not be on call until the GPR has had time to get back from the end of the afternoon DRC session (without leaving prematurely).

70% attendance is mandatory before a trainer can sign the VTR/1 form

Trainers (and GPRs) have access to the cumulative record of GPRs’ attendances (link near top of term timetable page).

The Associate Director will be notified of GPRs that aren’t meeting the 70% minimum attendance.
