Substance Misuse –Resources For Further LearningDrugscope (formerly “SCODA”) This is an excellent web site for disseminating educational resources, statistics and so forth. Particularly, it seel various resources including a CD ROM “Shared Care, Shared Learning.” Get your Trainers to buy one, they only cost about £12 and are an invaluable resource on common drugs of abuse, their effects and harm, and also various documents such as Patient Contracts etc. that can be “Cut and Pasted” in MS Word to suit individual practices.
The National Institute for Drug Abuse This gigantic site is the domain of NIDA, a US Government organisation, that has an annual budget of $400 million, for research alone. It is American, but contains many scientific papers and important research documents, as well as downloadable documents and much useful educational information.
Substance Misuse Management in General Practice This is an organisation of GPs interested in managing drug misusers, set up under the aegis of the RCGP. The web site has much useful information, including chat rooms where people can exchange ideas. It also has a free and excellent bimonthly news sheet which is free, and you can register for it on the website – you can also read back numbers there. It will also give details of annual conferences, the next is next May, up North somewhere.
Your local CDT worker Ask your trainer for a day off to visit the CDT, or get the CDT worker to come to the practice. They are lovely people, full of excellent information, and very useful allies.
