The Swindon/Bath GP Registrar Day Release Course

The Terms

We have two terms of 15 weeks each, starting in September and March. Some GP Registrars join at other times.

Some of the course days are at the Postgraduate Medical Centre, Royal United Hospital, Bath, some at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon. All run from 9.00am to 4.30pm.

Each term has a two-day introductory residential module held away from the hospital. This aims to help Registrars to get to know each other and the Course Organisers, as well as introducing the teaching format to be used during the term.

By the completion of the year, most of the important topics necessary for general practice will have been covered, while others will have been taught by the GP Registrar's own Trainer.

The Course Format

The format of the course is a mixture of small group work and workshop sessions.

Expert resources are recruited from the GP Registrars themselves, local GP Trainers, hospital consultants, together with other professionals, including administrators and accountants.

Group work helps solve problems encountered by the GP Registrars in their surgeries, as well as tackling clinical subjects from a GP's perspective.

Self-assessment and study of the techniques of consultation in General Practice are encouraged, with the help of videotaping and then analysing surgery sessions.

The Course provides an Introduction to:

  • The consultation
  • The doctor/patient relationship
  • The Primary Health Care Team
  • Practice management & organisation
  • Psychological and social medicine
  • Clinical aspects of practice
  • The organisation of the NHS.

Who joins our Day Release Course?

We have 25-30 GP Registrars on the course at any one time.

The GP Registrars come from widely different backgrounds and training, as well as covering a large age range. Some are on the Bath VTS, some on the Swindon VTS, whilst half are either constructing their own training scheme, are on the Trust-Attached GPR Scheme, or are working in HM Armed Forces.

Most of the Bath GPRs spend time at our excellent local hospice, Dorothy House. The Dorothy House page gives more details.

We've produced a superb Study Guide for new GP Registrars.
